Women's Memorial Annual Memorial Day Ceremony, May 28, 2012
The annual Memorial Day Ceremony at the Women’s Memorial is scheduled for 4 p.m., May 28. The ceremony, one of the major Memorial Day programs in the nation’s capital, is free and open to the public. The program includes formal military honors, remarks from servicewomen representing each of the services, wreath-layings and our traditional Rose Petal Ceremony with personal tributes to departed comrades. This year’s keynote address will be given by Navy Rear Admiral Michelle Howard, Chief of Staff to the Director, Strategic Plans and Policy, the Joint staff. The Fence to Air at the Women's Memorial, May 26-28, 2012
The Women’s Memorial Foundation is pleased to host the Washington DC premiere of the independent film, The Fence, during several showings over the Memorial Day weekend. Produced by Dreyfus Films, The Fence is a story of loss, healing and hope. Set in New England, the film showcases a fictional family struggling to cope with the loss of their soldier-son, who was killed in Iraq, when an Iraqi family moves in next door. Showings are free and open to the public and are scheduled for Saturday, May 26 at 10 a.m., 12 noon and 5 p.m.; Sunday, May 27 at 10 a.m., 12 noon, and 5 p.m.; and on Monday, May 28 at 10 a.m., 12 noon and 2 p.m. The Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors (TAPS) was instrumental in the production of the film. The Fence is a recent recipient of the “2012 Best Regional Short Film Award” at the Southeast New England Film Festival (SENE). Click here to view a trailer from the film. New Albany High School Symphony to Perform at Women's Memorial, May 27, 2012
The public is cordially invited to attend a special performance of the New Albany High School Symphony Orchestra at 1:30 p.m., May 27, 2012, in the Memorial exhibit gallery. Under the direction of Julia Ellis and Darren Falk, this 65-piece orchestra is drawn from the school district’s top ensembles—all recipients of consecutive Superior Ratings at the Ohio Music Educators Association State Orchestra Contest from 2010-2012. The orchestra program is celebrating its 10th year. The program is free and open to the public and promises to be an exceptional event. The orchestra will also be performing at George Mason University and the Jefferson Memorial.

Ms. Veteran America Regional Competitions, June 9 & 23, 2012
Dates for regional competitions for the first ever Ms. Veteran America Pageant: The Woman Beyond the Uniform have been set. Scheduled for June 9 in Arlington, VA, and Austin, TX, venues for these events will be the Women’s Memorial and Austin Community College. University High School, in Irvine, CA, will be the site of the third regional competition on June 23, 2012. The competitions are open to Active Duty, Guard and Reserve women and women veterans of any era. Regional winners will go on to compete at the national level on Oct. 7, 2012, in Arlington, VA. Prizes include $15,000 toward the purchase of a vehicle, educational scholarship, business start-up, home repairs or home closing costs or a full scholarship to Paul Mitchell Beauty and Cosmetology School. Founded, organized and managed by Final Salute, Inc., all proceeds from the competition will aid in continuing to provide homes for homeless female veterans and their children. Final Salute is one of a handful of organizations across the nation that specifically supports the housing needs of homeless female veterans and their children. Save the Date—9/11 Photography Exhibit Opening, Aug. 11, 2012
The Women’s Memorial Foundation is proud to host the Still Standing - Still Free 9/11 photography exhibit at the Women’s Memorial. Opening Aug. 11, 2012, the exhibit is a commemoration of the 11th anniversary of the terrorist attack on the Pentagon and features the work of Greater Washington DC area professional photographers Sean Kelly, Joe Pisciotta, Stephen Jaffe and Bob Pugh. The exhibit is free and open to the public and will be featured at the Memorial through Sept. 15, 2012. Mark your calendars to attend the exhibit opening on Aug. 11, 2012 from 4 to 7 p.m.

WAVES National 2012 Convention, Sept. 19-23, 2012
The 19th Biennial WAVES National Convention will be held at the Sheraton Lake Buena Vista Hotel in Orlando, FL, from Sept. 19-23, 2012. This year marks the 70th anniversary of the establishment of the WAVES and WAVES National’s 33rd anniversary.
